We’re excited to have Sam Shaw join the student team of Sophie Nevills and Ethan Ion. Sam started on October 23. We’ve been getting to know him and thought you might want to know about him too.
Here’s what he had to say in response to our soft-hitting investigative questions.
Q: Tell us about yourself
I'm from River Falls, Wisconsin. I have a double major in Mathematics and Statistics. I spend my free time doing outdoor activities such as running, skiing, and biking.
Q: What inspired you to apply for the research assistant position?
I applied for the research assistant position because I want to attend graduate school one day. This position offers a good opportunity to gain experience with real-world research projects, which is an important aspect of work in graduate school and beyond.
Q: If you could research any local economic development topic, what would it be? And why?
I would choose the future outlook of mining operations on Minnesota's Iron Range. Mining has a long history in northern Minnesota, and I am intrigued to learn about how the industry can adapt to operate in a more sustainable way.
Q: How do you see your position at the BBER helping you achieve your goals after college?
My position at BBER will expose me to a variety of research experiences and analytical work, which will help me find what I'm most passionate about and where I want my career to take me.
