Spotlight Series: Curt Walczak

The BBER is happy to share with you a series of interviews featuring some of our past project partners and stakeholders.

These amazing people have some pretty interesting jobs, so we’re bringing you a fun peek into their work-world along with some of their personal facets. This series will be ongoing, so if you have anyone you’d like to nominate as a potential Spotlight feature, put it in the comments, or send us an email, [email protected].  Enjoy!

Spotlight on Curt Walczak

Curt Walczak is the associate regional director for the Northland Small Business Development Center. He has been a business consultant for the past 22 years. The BBER had the pleasure of working with Curt on Regional Economic Indicators Forum (REIF) and serving on its board together. We also often tapped Curt for helping us with computer issues (he's a whiz!) when we shared suite space in the Duluth Technology Village.

What does a typical day look like in your job?

It changes a lot but is mostly filled with client appointments to discuss their business or start-up process, training sessions that I conduct, and outreach where I tell people about our services.

What do you like best about your current job?

First is the flexibility. I get to set my schedule and am able to work partially from home.  Second is all the people I get to meet and work with.

What about your current job do you find most challenging?

We are very busy now, so it’s challenging to find the time to meet with everyone.  Also, trying to answer all the client questions can be challenging.

If you could snap your fingers and solve any problem facing our community, what would it be?

I would eliminate illegal drugs and any addictions.  This, in turn, will solve a lot of other problems.

What is the most recent thing you’ve read (besides email)?

The Economist. I read a post about the stock market.

What is something (knowledge or a skill) you would like to learn?

I think everyone can always work on their soft skills.  One of them is to listen more than you speak.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve received that has helped you in your career?

Do everything you say you are going to do.  This is how you build trust.
