Welcome Erin Hopkins, the BBER's Newest UGRA

Get to know the BBER's newest student researcher

We are thrilled to welcome Erin Hopkins as our summer Undergraduate Research Assistant (UGRA). Erin, who started at the end of June, is triple majoring in economics, math, and stats and actuarial science. We are hopeful that she will stay on with the BBER throughout the next academic year until she graduates in May. In getting to know Erin, we asked her to share some things about herself. You can get to know her, too by reading the rest of this week’s blog.

Q: Tell us about yourself

I grew up in the small town of Rockford, Minnesota, which is outside of the Twin Cities, and lived there my whole life prior to coming to Duluth for college. I am on UMD’s women’s club ultimate frisbee team. In my spare time, you can find me outside doing some of my favorite outdoor activities—hammocking, going to the beach, and going to parks that are local and up the North Shore. I also love going to concerts and have even traveled to Ohio and Maryland to attend some.

Q: What inspired you to apply for the research assistant position?

I took the Labor Economics class that was taught by BBER director Monica Haynes this past spring and really enjoyed it. She mentioned this position in class and it seemed like a great opportunity for me to apply what I had been learning and expand my knowledge even further.

Q: If you could research any local economic development topic, what would it be?

It would be about the economic impact of the colleges in Duluth. It would be interesting to see what Duluth might look like without the economic effects of all the colleges in the region.

Q: How do you see your position at the BBER helping you achieve your goals after college?

This position is allowing me to get real-world experience related to my studies. I will be better equipped to transition to a job after graduation and will have a leg up with experience straight out of college.
