LSBE Award Descriptions and Eligibility

LSBE developed the following awards to recognize the outstanding contributions of faculty, staff and students. The description of each award is given below.

LSBE Faculty Research Excellence Awards

The purpose of the LSBE Faculty Research Excellence Awards is to recognize a faculty member who has distinguished themselves in the area of research over the past calendar year. Two awards will be given. One award to an early career faculty member, considered to be a faculty member with up to six years of service in LSBE and one award to an advanced career faculty member, considered to be a faculty member with more than six years of service in LSBE. Any faculty member is eligible to receive the appropriate award with the winners decided by the LSBE Administrative Committee with input from the ICFD committee if appropriate.

 

LSBE Faculty Service Excellence Award

The purpose of the LSBE Faculty Service Excellence Award is to recognize a faculty member whose activities have contributed to the success of LSBE across various levels of service including the department, school, campus, university, community, and respectful profession.

Any faculty member is eligible to receive this award, and we encourage nominations regardless of one’s tenure - and/or term-level status. We expect that the longer a faculty member has been employed at UMD the more service activities they will have been involved in. Therefore, the length of time the nominee has been at UMD will be taken into account in selecting the recipient.

Any student (employed by LSBE or not), faculty, and staff may nominate an LSBE employee for this award.

 

LSBE Faculty Teaching Excellence Award

The purpose of the LSBE Faculty Teaching Excellence Award is to recognize faculty members who have distinguished themselves in the area of teaching over the past calendar year. Two awards will be given. One award to an early career faculty member, considered to be a faculty member with up to six years of service in LSBE and one award to an advanced career faculty member, considered to be a faculty member with more than six years of service in LSBE.

This award looks to recognize a faculty member whose contribution to teaching demonstrates excellence within their role as a teacher. When nominating an individual, please be specific in citing examples of how the individual has been outstanding in their contribution. Faculty shall be nominated by either a student or an LSBE faculty or staff member for this award. The CARE Committee shall review all nominations and make recommendations to the Administrative Committee or the Dean.

 

LSBE Staff Excellence Awards Nominations

The purpose of the LSBE Staff Excellence Award is to recognize an LSBE staff member who has distinguished themselves by providing excellent support to the School, Faculty, Staff and/or Students over the past calendar year. Please note that the committee is looking to recognize two individuals per year.

All staff shall be eligible to be nominated for this award. Nominations may be submitted by LSBE faculty, staff, or students. The award looks to recognize an individual who demonstrates excellence within their role. When nominating an individual, please cite specific examples of how the individual has been outstanding in their contribution. It is important that we recognize these exceptional efforts. If there are more than two staff members nominated, the CARE Committee shall review all nominations and make recommendations to the Administrative Committee or the Dean.

Any LSBE student, faculty, staff may nominate an LSBE employee for this award.

 

LSBE Staff Service Excellence Award

The purpose of the LSBE Staff Service Excellence Award is to recognize one LSBE staff member who has distinguished themselves by providing excellent service to the School, Campus or Community over the past calendar year.

All staff shall be eligible to be nominated for this award. Staff shall be nominated by LSBE staff, faculty, or students for this award. The award looks to recognize an individual whose contribution is one that demonstrates excellence within their role. When nominating an individual, please cite specific examples of how the individual has been outstanding in their service contribution. If there is more than one staff member nominated, the CARE Committee shall review all nominations and make a recommendation to the Administrative Committee or the Dean.

Any LSBE student, faculty, and staff may nominate an LSBE employee for this award.

 

LSBE Outstanding Student Employee Award

The purpose of the LSBE Outstanding Student Employee Award is to recognize two LSBE student employees who have distinguished themselves by providing excellent service to the School, Campus, or Community over the past calendar year.

All student employees shall be eligible to be nominated for this award. The award looks to recognize a student employee whose contribution is one that demonstrates excellence within their role. When nominating an individual, please be specific in citing examples of how the individual has been outstanding in his/her contribution. Student employees shall be nominated by their supervisor, staff or faculty for this award. If there are more than two student employees nominated, the CARE Committee shall review all nominations and make recommendations to the Administrative Committee or the Dean.

Any faculty or staff may nominate an LSBE employee for this award.

 

LSBE Student Service Excellence Award

The purpose of the LSBE Student Excellence Award is to recognize up to five LSBE students who have distinguished themselves by providing excellent service to the School, Campus, or Community over the past calendar year. All students shall be eligible to be nominated for this award.

The award looks to recognize students whose contribution is one that demonstrates outstanding levels of service. Students shall be nominated by the LSBE Advising and Academic Services department from the pool of candidates who achieve the service accreditation. Nominations shall be forwarded to the Chair of the CARE committee for review by the committee. If the number of student nominations is greater than the number of awards available, the CARE Committee shall review all nominations and make recommendations to the Administrative Committee or the Dean.

 

LSBE Outstanding Student Organization Award

The purpose of the LSBE Outstanding Student Organization Award is to recognize one LSBE student organization/club that has distinguished itself by providing outstanding service to its student members, the School, Campus, or Community over the past calendar year.

All LSBE student organizations shall be eligible to be nominated for this award. The award looks to recognize a student organization/club whose contribution is one that demonstrates excellence within its role as an organization/club. When nominating a student organization/club, please be specific in citing examples of how the organization/club has been outstanding in their contribution. Student organizations/clubs shall be nominated by the club advisor or any other LSBE faculty or staff member for this award. If there is more than one student organization/club nominated, the CARE Committee shall review all nominations and make a recommendation to the Administrative Committee or the Dean.

 

LSBE’s Random Act of Kindness Award

The purpose of the LSBE Random Act of Kindness Award is to recognize an LSBE student who went out of their way to make a genuinely kind gesture, carry out an act of kindness or of good samaritanship on campus or in the campus community.

This winner will be presented with an acrylic/glass award. There is no associated monetary component, and the honor will be nomination dependent such that it may or may not be given annually.

 

LSBE Student Award for DEI Advocacy

The LSBE Student Award for DEI Advocacy is designated to recognize LSBE student advocacy and efforts outside the classroom to enact change in support of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) at LSBE, UMD, or the Twin Ports Community. The award purposely takes a broad interpretation of the ‘diversity, equity, and inclusion’ activities, although the awardee’s efforts should generally benefit those who are historically underrepresented, and those with diverse or marginalized backgrounds. The achievements that this award will honor should involve leadership, service and activities outside the classroom that promote social awareness and the spirit of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Projects completed as part of the course requirements are excluded from the purview of this award.

All current LSBE students and organizations/groups are eligible for this award. Candidates can be nominated or self-nominated. Nominations can come from both within and outside LSBE. The winner is invited to join the LSBE Unit Change Team as a student representative during the following academic year. If a group is selected, one member of the group can represent the group on the LSBE Unit Change Team (UCT).

The nominations for the LSBE Student Award for DEI Advocacy will be reviewed by the LSBE Unit Change Team (UCT).
