Experiencing a New York City Internship

Grace Slagle, a senior Marketing major, had an incredible summer in New York City as an intern at ICR. She shares her story below.

I'm Grace Slagle, a current senior at UMD-Duluth, majoring in marketing with a minor in communication. I was thrilled to be interning at ICR, a strategic communications firm, located just two blocks away from the iconic Chrysler Building in New York, New York. For the summer, I found a sublet in Hell's Kitchen, and living in the city was an incredible experience, filled with new learning opportunities and exciting adventures.

In my internship, I was part of the Consumer Public Relations team, specifically focusing on the Digital and Social sector. I've had the chance to work with cutting-edge software and tools like media databases, social media listening, and analytics tools, all of which were instrumental in enhancing campaigns and measuring performance. Additionally, I gained valuable insights into diverse strategies and tactics used to boost brand recognition, reach, and engagement.

Working with an array of clients from various industries, including food giants like Burger King and fitness brands like iFIT, was a rewarding experience. It allowed me to work with a wealth of information and interact with people from different backgrounds.

One of the highlights of my internship was a visit to Nasdaq with all the interns, where we got to tour the building, located in the heart of Times Square, and witness Expedia ringing the bell to go public. The opport

unity to see such a profound business in action and engage with the people shaping Nasdaq left a significant impression on me.

Throughout the summer, I worked on an intern project with my partner, creating a presentation about Fogo De Chao going public with an IPO. We invested considerable effort in conducting thorough research and successfully presented our findings to our managers.

I can hardly believe how quickly summer flew by. I am immensely grateful for the chance to have worked with such remarkable individuals and to have been involved in work that I found genuinely enjoyable and fulfilling every single day.
