Five Years Later: Checking in with Former Research Assistant Austin Kuhn

Former BBER undergraduate research assistant, Austin Kuhn, lets us know about his journey post-graduation, how the BBER has helped him with his career, and his insight on a few other items.

What have you been up to since graduation?

Upon graduating from UMD, I began my professional career as a data analyst at a small consulting firm. I worked there for two years and then found another opportunity at a large Fortune 500 company called C.H. Robinson. I have been at C.H. Robinson for just over three years, and I am now in my second role. I currently work in Human Resources as a senior people analytics administrator.

What do you love the most about your current job?

As a senior people analytics administrator I am deep within the data, which is a great fit, since I like the technical/behind the scenes side of analytics. I have a ton of freedom and the ability to express my creativity every single day. My favorite things about my current job include the team I work with, the people I interact with, and the opportunity to learn new tools such as Python, Alteryx, and Power BI!

What was your most memorable experience during your time with the BBER?

Having worked on a few projects during my time at the BBER, I would say researching the Split Incentive project was extremely memorable. However, while that was a very interesting and fun project, the absolute most memorable experience was when I was given the opportunity to present at the Regional Economic Indicators Forum (REIF). It was slightly terrifying to present in front of so many people, but I ultimately grew by stepping outside of my comfort zone.

How did your experience at the BBER prepare you for your current career path?

I was still undecided as to what I actually wanted to do when I was working at the BBER. By working there I really discovered my love for analytics and research. It was clear that I had the technical skills and passion to continue to pursue a career in the analytics field. After graduation, I focused on searching for data analysis positions until I found my first opportunity in June 2016!

Any advice for current UMD students?

It wasn't until my junior year that I became much more open to situations that would take me outside of my comfort zone. I would recommend to anyone to take those chances/risks. Be open to new opportunities, as they will allow you to grow. You will look back at those moments and be so proud of yourself and thankful for having said yes to those opportunities! Never settle with the easy route.

What’s your favorite Duluth memory?

I have so many memories during my time as a student at UMD. I miss Duluth every single day, and I hope to move back at some point in my life. This is likely very cliche, but my favorite thing about Duluth is how beautiful the city is. As for my favorite memory, I think the times I spent at Sir Ben's with friends and family really hit home. I used to play in a band at Sir Ben's, and those were some of the best nights I've ever had!

As a basketball fan, what do you think about the Timberwolves’s chances this coming season?

I think we have a fun roster on paper, but we will see if we can improve upon last year! Anthony Edwards is an unbelievable player--my favorite by far!
