Join in the festivities on June 19 in celebration of when word reached the south about slavery’s end. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is celebrated to commemorate the day—June 19, 1865—when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were told they were free. Though the Civil War ended several months prior, and the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863, it took time for the enactment of slavery’s abolishment to actually happen.
One of the events for the newly established federal holiday is the NAACP Juneteenth celebration at the Central Hillside Community Center—12 East Fourth Street in Duluth—from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Black-owned businesses and local nonprofits will be tabling at the event, including the UMD Office of Diversity and Inclusion. The event also will have food, an open mic, and special entertainment. The event is free, and all are welcome.
“We are looking forward to and encourage people in our community to participate in these celebrations as a way to strengthen the ties in our community, support local businesses, and build networks for stronger community responses to the challenges Duluthians face,” said Interim LSBE Associate Dean Jannifer David.
