In early December, eleven new members were inducted into LSBE's chapter of Omicron Delta Epsilon (ODE), the international honor society for economics.

Betsy Johnson, Ashley Brown, Colleen Swenson, Chris Lehmann, Lizzy Karsten, Alan Scholer, Kevin Soderholm, Matt Ploenzke, Ross LaDuke, Sungkook Lee, and Kyle Mareck joined LSBE's chapter, which began in 1973. Each year 10 to 15 students from UMD are invited to be members of ODE.

Worldwide there are 672 chapters located in the countries of the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Puerto Rico, South Africa, Egypt, France, Kazakhstan, and United Arab Emirates.

The objectives of Omicron Delta Epsilon are recognition of scholastic attainment and the honoring of outstanding achievements in economics and the establishment of closer ties between students and faculty in economics within UMD's Department of Economics.

Membership is attained through application and meeting eligibility requirements of completion of 12 semester hours of economics courses, attainment of at least a B in all classes, and a class standing in the upper one-third.

"These students have definitely earned their place in ODE," said Maureen O’Brien, Economics Department Head and Morse-Alumni Distinguished Teaching Professor of Economics in LSBE, "and it is a definite pleasure for the Department of Economics to be able to recognize their accomplishments in this way."
