LSBE Honors

Latin Honors

The Campus Assembly has established the policy that a maximum of 15 percent of the graduating class can graduate with college honors. In LSBE, the top 3 percent of the graduating class (with a GPA of at least 3.80 in all coursework completed in residence at UMD) will be designated summa cum laude; the next 5 percent (with a GPA of at least 3.50 in all coursework completed in residence at UMD) will be designated magna cum laude, and the next 7 percent (with a GPA of at least 3.20 in all coursework completed in residence at UMD) will be designated cum laude.

At the mid-point of each term, the GPAs necessary to achieve these honors are posted in the LSBE Advising and Academic Services Office. The GPAs are established on the basis of the record of the previous year’s graduating class. To be eligible for honors, students must earn at least 30 credits at UMD. For more information, contact the LSBE Advising and Academic Services Office.

The Fall 2023 Latin Honor Cut-Offs are:

  • SUMMA cum laude: 3.947
  • MAGNA cum laude: 3.791
  • CUM laude: 3.675

Program Honors

Two students in each major with the highest U of M GPAs and at least a minimum of a 3.30 U of M GPA within the Bachelor of Accounting or Bachelor of Business Administration degrees will be awarded program honors. Students will be reviewed twice per academic year, during March for Spring & Summer graduates and October for Fall graduates, when their final term is in progress. For the top two Fall graduates to receive program honors, their GPA must be higher than at least one of the previous Spring/Summer honorees within their major.

For Fall graduates participating in commencement in the May before their graduation term, they will not be eligible for public recognition (regalia cords/notation in the program) at the commencement ceremony due to the potential for a significant number of requirements remaining. Final program honors on official academic records will be determined and added when their Fall, final semester, is in progress. If a Fall graduate participates in the Commencement Ceremony the May after completion of their degree they will be eligible for public recognition.

Dean’s List for Academic Excellence

Each semester, qualifying LSBE students are recognized for high academic achievement by being placed on the LSBE Dean’s List for Academic Excellence. A notation is placed on the qualifying students’ transcripts indicating this achievement. To be eligible for the LSBE Dean’s List the student must:

  • be in residence in the Labovitz School of Business and Economics
  • have earned a 3.50 semester GPA
  • have completed all credits attempted in the semester
  • have completed a minimum of 12 letter-graded credits in the semester
  • have no grades of “I,” “F,” or “N” for the semester
