The Benefits of Summer Classes

If you’ve wondered why people take summer classes, here are some of the benefits of using the summer months for your education.

If you’ve wondered why people take summer classes, here are some of the benefits of using the summer months for your education.

  • Some classes that are slated for your major/minor have filled up before you could get in, or they weren’t offered during a time that fit with the rest of your classes. Summer Session (May Term and Summer Term) provides the opportunity for you to get into a class that you have had difficulty putting into your schedule.
  • Students with a double major or double minor can get ahead on their graduation timeline. This also is true for standard single major/minor students. Imagine graduating a semester ahead of your anticipated date or being able to catch up from something that had extended your schedule.
  • Summer session offers a prime time to take one or two classes on which you can direct your focus. It might be the time to consider taking one of the more challenging classes from your required courses list.
  • Most summer classes are smaller in size (in terms of the number of students enrolled). This will allow you to get to know the other students and instructor better. It’s another perfect opportunity for those harder classes, where you may need a little more assistance.
  • If you’ve ever considered studying abroad, summer is a great time to experience that. There are a number of shorter trips offered during the summer.

You can register until June 5 for Summer Session classes.

More information about Summer Session, including class schedules, registration, financial aid, on-campus housing, and summer employment opportunities can be found at www.d.umn.edu/summer.
