One of the primary goals of the Financial Markets Program is to provide "hands-on" learning. Through not only the Financial Markets Lab, but through experiencing the financial industry first hand and real time.

Consumer Discretionary Sector

Brendon Babcock

Brendon graduated from Forest Lake Senior High school in 2015 and is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Brendon is on track to graduate in the spring of 2018 with a B.B.A in Financial Markets Finance, and a minor in Economics. Brendon was inducted Beta Gamma Sigma, an honor society accredited by AACSB International, which recognizes students in the top 7% academically, within the Labovitz School of Business and Economics. Brendon is also the treasurer of the UMD Investment Club, serves on the Dean’s Student Advisory Group, and is participating in the CFA Research Challenge this year. Over the summer, Brendon interned at Columbia Threadneedle Investments as an Investment Accounting Intern, tracking the Net Asset Value of the company’s mutual funds, and reconciled daily positions. In his free time, Brendon is an avid tennis player, enjoys keeping up with sports, boating in the summer, and spending his time with family and friends in the great outdoors. Upon Graduation, Brendon plans to pursue his CFA designation along with a career in the highly competitive investment management field.

Tyler Hendrickson

Tyler graduated from Albert Lea High School in 2015 and is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth perusing his B.B.A. in Financial Markets Finance. Tyler is also participating in the CFA Institute Research Challenge this year to gain a better understanding of equity analysis. Tyler is on track to graduate in May 2019 and is looking forward to the challenging and hands-on experience that the program has to offer. In addition to his academic responsibilities, Tyler also works as a Relationship Banker at TCF Bank. When he isn’t looking for his next great investment, Tyler enjoys music, playing intramural hockey, broomball, and softball as well as spending time outdoors with family and friends. Upon graduation, Tyler plans to peruse a challenging career in the Financial Services Industry as well as obtain his CFA designation. 

 

Consumer Staples Sector

Tanner Steele

Tanner graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in 2015, and is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Tanner is on track to graduate in May of 2019 with a B.B.A in Financial Markets Finance and a minor in Economics. Over the summer, Tanner worked at First Security Bank in Detroit Lakes and also worked part-time at Zorbaz. Tanner’s favorite hobbies are wakeboarding and wakesurfing, snowboarding, and playing hockey. After graduation, Tanner plans on pursuing the CFA designation and is also considering undertaking an MBA program. Tanner is excited to expand his knowledge of the markets through the program and has hopes of moving to New York or Chicago to work within the Financial Services Industry.

Randy Wilson

Randy is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth and will graduate in May 2019. Throughout the summer, Randy interned at Allianz Life in Minneapolis, MN where he expanded both his communication and analytical skills through various projects within Internal Audit and Allianz Investment Management. Randy has recently found a passion for equity research through his involvement in the LSBE Financial Markets Program. Randy is looking forward to expanding his knowledge of the markets and increasing his analytical skills throughout the course of his senior year. Randy’s interests include personally investing, watching sports, exercising, and golfing. Randy also enjoys spending time with friends and family and has always been a people person. Upon graduation, Randy plans to pursue a career in the Financial Service Industry. 

Energy Sector

Matt Bisanz

Matt is originally from St. Paul, MN and graduated from Cretin-Derham Hall in 2015. Matt is currently a senior at University of Minnesota Duluth and is on track to graduate in May of 2019 with a B.B.A in Financial Markets - Finance. During his time at UMD, Matt has worked as a bookkeeper/accountant (for a senior level boss) managing all internal and external finances for events at The Weber Music Hall at UMD. In the summer of 2018, Matt interned at State Farm Insurance as a sales intern where he developed experience in sales by making cold calls. Through hard work and persistence Matt brought in 20 new clients, which averaged five leads per day, and created numerous Google Reviews for the company. He currently works at Great Water Financial under a senior level boss, assisting him in all operations. Matt plans to move to New York after graduation and pursue a career in sales within the financial services industry. 

Ciara Eilers

Ciara graduated from Sartell High School in 2015 and is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Ciara will graduate in the Spring of 2019 with a B.B.A in Financial Markets Finance and a minor in Economics.  Over the Summer of 2018, Ciara embarked on a journey of a lifetime down under, in Australia. While in the program, Ciara is an active member in the UMD Investment Club. Ciara is looking forward to advancing her knowledge and broadening her analytical skills throughout the program experience. Her interests include volunteering at elementary schools, exploring new places, and playing soccer. Upon graduation, Ciara plans to move to Australia to pursue a career in Wealth Management working with client relationships.  

Financial Sector

Mason Hemze

Mason graduated from Waconia High School in 2015 and is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Mason is pursuing his interest of the financial markets by participating as a student equity analyst in the LSBE Financial Markets Program and is on schedule to obtain his academic degree in May 2019 with a B.B.A in Financial Markets Finance. This year, Mason is participating in the 2019 CFA Institute Research Challenge. Additionally, he has been a member of the Investment Club at UMD since his junior year. Mason is developing a broad knowledge of the financial markets with an in-depth understanding of what drives markets. In the summer of 2018 and to present, Mason has been employed as Cash Management Assistant for Western National Bank where he assists in the management of the bank’s fixed income portfolio and helps to manage the funds of large depositors along with various financial projects assigned by the CFO. In his spare time, Mason enjoys hiking and camping which he pairs with photography, developing his culinary abilities, and reading. Upon graduation, Mason plans to pursue his CFA designation and acquire his MBA while seeking a challenging career in the Financial Services industry. 

Scott McNamara

Scott graduated from The Academy of Holy Angels in Richfield, MN in 2015 and completed his first two years at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. Scott has been a student-athlete playing Division I Lacrosse. Scott transferred to The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) to focus his attention on academics. After enrolling at UMD, Scott was inducted into the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society which recognizes the top ___% of students within The Labovitz School of Business Economics. Scott is on track to graduate in May, 2019 with a B.B.A. in Financial Markets Finance and a minor in Marketing. Scott plans to fully utilize the program experience and leverage his interest in a career in the Financial Services Industry and pursue his CFA or CFP designation. Scott is captain of UMD’s Lacrosse team and enjoys skiing and fishing. 

Healthcare Sector

Ryan Guimont

Ryan graduated from Centennial High School in 2014 and is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Ryan will graduate in May of 2019 with a B.B.A in Financial Markets Finance and a minor in Economics. This year, Ryan plans to also participate in the CFA Institute Research Challenge. Outside of the markets, Ryan enjoys backpacking, fishing, and spending time with friends and family. Upon graduation, Ryan plans to pursue a challenging career in Financial Services Industry and obtain his CFA designation.

Cassie Pelland

Cassie graduated from Warroad High School in 2015, and is currently a senior at UMD. Double majoring with a B.Acc. and B.B.A. in Accounting and Financial Markets Finance, Cassie is on track to graduate in May 2019. In 2018, Cassie interned at K & M Accounting, and at Marvin Windows and Doors working on their Operation Systems teams. At UMD, Cassie served as President and Assistant Captain on the Women’s Club Hockey Team during the 2018-2019 season. Cassie is actively involved with Women in Business, the Accounting Club, and the UMD Investment Club to broaden her knowledge of business and the Financial Service Industry. In her free time, Cassie loves to travel, fish, hunt, read and spend time with family and friends. Cassie also enjoys volunteering at hockey camps for kids. Upon graduation, Cassie plans to acquire her CFA and/or CPA as she pursues a career in the Financial Services Industry.

Industrials Sector

Andrew Cepress

Andrew graduated from Roseville Area High School in 2015 and is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Andrew expects to graduate in May of 2019 with a B.B.A in Financial Markets Finance and a minor in Economics. Andrew currently serves as the Vice President of the Investment Club at UMD where he leads discussions on trading strategies and current events affecting the financial markets. In the summer of 2018, Andrew was employed by Focus Financial as an intern at the company’s corporate office in Minneapolis, Minnesota. During his time at Focus Financial, Andrew gained valuable experience in the Financial Services Industry through preparing investment and financial management proposals as well as participating in industry related conferences. This year, Andrew is participating in the CFA Institute Research Challenge. In his spare time, Andrew enjoys studying the markets, playing hockey and spending time with family and friends. Upon graduation, Andrew plans to pursue a career as an Investment Analyst and work towards obtaining his CFA designation.

Ryan Meyers

Ryan graduated from Elk River High School in 2014 and is a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Ryan is on track to graduate in May of 2019 with a B.B.A. in Financial Markets Finance. Ryan serves as a Student Director in the LSBE Financial Markets Program and President of the UMD Investment Club. Ryan is a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society and will also be competing in the CFA Institute Research Challenge. In his spare time, Ryan enjoys spending time on the boat, hanging out with his family and friends, hunting, golfing, reading, and watching both college and professional football. After graduation, Ryan plans to pursue a career in Equity Research and obtain his CFA and MBA. 

Jake Newsom

Jake is from Blaine, Minnesota and graduated from Spring Lake Park High School in 2015. Jake is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth and will graduate in May of 2019 with a B.B.A in Financial Markets Finance. This summer, Jake worked in the corporate finance and accounting department for Bio-Techne, a publicly traded company. Jake worked on the accounting team assisting with closing the fiscal year of the company along with SEC and Sarbanes Oxley requirements. In addition, Jake was also involved in the forecasting activities for the company. Jake is a participant in the CFA Institute Research Challenge during this year and a participant in the UMD Investment Club,  finance director for the UMD Entrepreneurship Conference Planning Committee, and President of Executives Club UMD. In his free time, Jake enjoys to hunt, fish, golf, and spend time with family and friends. After graduation, Jake plans to pursue a challenging career in the Financial Services Industry while obtaining his MBA and CFA designation.

Technology Sector 

Brandon Evancevich

Brandon graduated from Mesabi East High School in 2015 and is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Brandon is on track to graduate in May of 2019 with a B.B.A in Financial Markets Finance. Brandon was honored to be inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma last year, the international business honor society for AACSB-accredited schools. Beta Gamma Sigma recognizes the top 5% of business schools in the world and inductees are recognized for being in the top 10% academically. In his free time, Brandon enjoys weightlifting, golf, hockey, and football. Brandon also enjoys traveling and spending time with family and friends. Upon graduation Brandon plans to pursue a career in the Financial Services Industry.

Grant Fleagle

Grant graduated from St. Francis High School in 2014 and is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth.  Grant expects to graduate in May of 2019 with a B.B.A in Financial Markets Finance, a minor in Psychology, and is an active member in the Investments Club. Over the summer, Grant interned with MZ North America as an Investor Relations Analyst Intern.  Grant provided direct support to MZ Associates and Managing Directors, started MZ’s retail investor outreach program, and assisted in managing inbound investor inquiries. Grant has gained incredible experience and knowledge of the business through supporting the development, implementation, and management of a comprehensive and strategic investor relations program. Grant will continue his internship with MZ North America throughout the school year with MZ North America and looks forward to further expanding his knowledge of the financial markets and sharpening his skill in equity analysis while in the program. Grant is also a member of the 2019 CFA Institute Research Challenge team at UMD.  Outside of school, Grant enjoys hiking, fishing, hunting, mountain biking, cooking, and auto repair, as well as spending time with friends and family. Grant looks forward to a challenging and rewarding year, and plans to pursue a career in the Financial Services Industry and obtaining the CFA designation after graduation. 

Nathan Schield

Nathan graduated from Minnetonka High School in 2015 and is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Nathan will graduate in May 2019 with a B.B.A in Financial Markets Finance and a minor in Psychology. Nathan received the LSBE Honors & FMP Idea Drilling Scholarships this year and ranks in the top 5% of his academic class. During his time at UMD, Nathan has been actively involved in a variety of service activities on campus. He currently serves as the Finance Director for the Kirby Program Board, council member of the Student Services Fee Committee (SSFC), and an Officer of the Investment Club. In his free time, Nathan enjoys spending time with friends and family, exercising, playing basketball, and exploring the North Shore of Minnesota. Upon graduation, Nathan plans to pursue a rewarding career in the Financial Services Industry and will obtain his CFP designation.
