One of the primary goals of the Financial Markets Program is to provide "hands-on" learning. Through not only the Financial Markets Lab, but through experiencing the financial industry first hand and real time.

Consumer Discretionary Sector

Frank Takkinen

Frank Takkinen

Frank graduated from Burnsville High School in 2014 and is currently a senior at The University of Minnesota Duluth. Frank expects to graduate in May of 2018 with a B.B.A in Financial Markets Finance. Frank serves as the Treasurer of the UMD Investment club and as a student director of the Financial Markets Program. This year, Frank will be a participant of the CFA Institute Research Challenge. Over the summer of 2017, Frank interned with Columbia Threadneedle Investments as an Investment Accounting Intern tracking the net asset value of their mutual funds and reconciling daily cash and holding positions. Prior to working with Columbia Threadneedle, Frank also interned with MN Power in Duluth MN as a Customer Information System Intern. In Frank’s free time he enjoys fishing, hunting, playing hockey, golfing and spending time with friends and family outdoors. Upon graduation, Frank plans to pursue a challenging role as an Investment Analyst and work toward obtaining the CFA designation.

Linnea Hedin   

Linnea Hedin

Linnea is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth and will graduate in May 2018. She is originally from Stockholm, Sweden and moved to Duluth when she was 18 years old in order to play for UMD’s Division 1 Women’s Hockey Team and obtain a B.B.A in Financial Markets Finance and a minor in Political Science. She had the honor to join Beta Gamma Sigma, an honor society accredited by AACSB International. Inductees are recognized for being in the top 10% academically at the University of Minnesota Duluth within the Labovitz School of Business and Economics. She also was recognized as a WCHA Scholar-Athlete two years in a row. In her spare time and in addition to her interest in the markets and hockey, she likes to travel or stay active playing paddle tennis or golf. Upon graduation, Linnea has plans on pursuing a challenging career in either management consulting or the financial industry.

Ryan Underwood

Ryan graduated from Lakeville South High School in 2014 and is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Ryan expects to graduate in May 2018 with a B.B.A in Financial Markets Finance and a minor in Economics. Since April of 2017, Ryan has worked as an Assistant Manager for Champs Sports in Duluth, Minnesota. This year, Ryan is looking forward to expanding his financial skills by actively participating in the Wells Fargo Financial Markets Program. Outside of work and academics, Ryan enjoys discussing the latest sports trends, cooking, fishing, traveling and enjoying the company of friends and family. Upon graduation, Ryan plans to pursue a career in the Sporting Goods and Apparel Industry and obtain his MBA.

Jake Schmidt

Jake Schmidt

Jake graduated from Forest Lake Senior High in 2008 and joined the Air Force as an Aviation Resource Manager where he was stationed at Hill Air Force Base in Utah from 2009-2013. During his time in the military he gained valuable attributes such as discipline, time management and problem solving skills in a high stress and fast paced environment. Jake is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth and expects to graduate in May of 2018 with a B.B.A. in Financial Markets Finance. Jake is currently serving as an Operations Intern in the Wealth and Investment Management Division of Wells Fargo in Duluth. Jake enjoys hunting, fishing and spending time with his family in his free time. He also enjoys spending time helping veterans at UMD as the Veterans Affairs Work-Study. Upon graduation Jake plans to acquire his CFA designation as he is pursuing a career in the Financial Services Industry.

Nawal Mirza

Nawal Mirza

Nawal graduated from high school in Sialkot, Pakistan, in 2014. She is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth and will graduate in May 2018 with a B.B.A. in Financial Markets-Finance and a B.Acc. in Accounting. Nawal is a member of University Honors (UH) Program and has had the honor of being inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma and Mortar Board National Honor Society. In summer of 2017, Nawal worked at Ernst & Young as a Transfer Pricing-International Tax intern in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She has previously worked at MTS Systems Corporation and the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) as a Certified Volunteer. Nawal is also a participant in the 2018 CFA Institute Research Challenge. In her spare time, Nawal enjoys traveling, reading, cooking, and spending time with friends and family. Nawal is actively engaged in community service through volunteering at Animal Allies and CHUM. Upon graduation, Nawal plans on pursuing a challenging career in the financial services industry and obtaining the CFA designation.

Energy Sector

Sam Johnson

Sam is from Blaine, Minnesota, graduating in 2014 from Blaine High School. He is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth and will graduate in May 2018 with a B.B.A in Financial Markets Finance. Sam is also the Vice President of the Investment Club at UMD. When he’s not working towards his degree, he enjoys studying the markets, spending time with friends and family, backpacking, hiking, and hunting. After graduation Sam will pursue the CFP designation as well as an MBA.

Danny Eggerichs

Danny graduated from Champlin Park High School in 2014 and is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth. He will graduate in the Spring of 2018 with a B.B.A in Financial Markets Finance. Danny started interning with JMR Financial Group in Duluth this past summer assisting with investment analysis and pension plan management. He will also continue this internship throughout the fall semester. Danny is looking forward to broadening his knowledge and sharpening his analytical skills throughout the program experience. His interests outside the classroom include golfing, playing hockey, and watching sports. Upon graduation, Danny plans on backpacking abroad in Europe before pursuing a challenging career in the financial services industry.

Financial Sector

Matt Dodd

Matt graduated from Duluth Marshall High School in 2007 and is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth. After high school he chose to pursue his entrepreneurial ambitions before ultimately enrolling at UMD. Matt is on pace to successfully complete his degree program in May 2017 with a B.B.A. in Financial Markets – Finance and a B.B.A. in Entrepreneurship. He’s an active member in the Investment Club as well as the Entrepreneurship Club. Matt interned over the summer at Northwestern Mutual as a Financial Representative and chose to continue that internship during the school year. At Northwestern Mutual, he consults with clients to determine their financial goals before building them a comprehensive financial plan. He utilizes his compassionate demeanor to build solid relationships with his clients built on trust. Matt is an active member of the Duluth community as he enjoys volunteering for organizations around Duluth. Outside of his professional pursuits, Matt enjoys spending time with his son Jackson, reading books, traveling, and spending time outdoors. After graduating, Matt plans to pursue his entrepreneurial ambitions with dreams of scaling his proprietary trading firm. He will continue to study and learn about finance in an effort to curb his unquenchable thirst for trading and investing.

Samir Bushra

Samir graduated from Burnsville High School in 2015 and is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth and is planning to graduate in May of 2018 with a B.B.A. in Financial Markets, Finance, with a minor in International Business and in Management Information Systems. In the summer of May 2017, Samir interned with U.S. Bank in their Wholesale Banking division as a Commercial Real Estate Credit Analyst Intern at their corporate headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Samir has also interned as a Financial Counseling Intern at LSS Financial Counseling, is a member of University Honors and Mortar Board National College Honor Society, and has won first place in U.S. Bank’s Intern Innovation Day Competition. He is currently in the midst of researching algorithmic trading strategies in a University sponsored project, and he has been on the Dean’s list every semester of his college career. Additionally, he is the Head of Logistics and Operations of the University newspaper, Group Captain of Investment Club, and the Treasurer and Business Field Networker of Student Leadership Council. Additionally, he was previously a Macro and Micro Economic Tutor for the University.

Healthcare Sector

Reed Leonidas

Reed graduated from South St. Paul High School in 2014. He is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth and will graduate in May 2018 with a B.B.A in Financial Markets and a minor in Economics. While in the program, Reed is also competing in the 2018 CFA Institute Research Challenge. During his college career, Reed has been very active in campus events, serving as the president of Investment Club, and a participant in intramural softball and volleyball. Outside of academia he enjoys hunting, fishing, sports, and spending time with family. Upon graduation, Reed plans on pursuing the CFA designation, and work within the Financial Services Industry. He is also interested in undertaking an MBA program.

Ryan Kimbrel

Ryan graduated from Hopkins High School in 2014 and is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth. He will graduate in May 2018 with a B.B.A in Financial Markets Finance and a minor in Economics. This past summer Ryan interned with Wells Fargo Wealth and Investment Management. During his experience he learned how to properly manage the company’s institutional assets while working under portfolio managers and investment analysts. This year Ryan will be participating in the 2018 CFA Institute Research Challenge. Ryan has been very involved during his time at UMD, serving as an Investment Club Officer, and a participant in intramural hockey, football, softball, and basketball. Outside of the classroom Ryan spends a lot of his time golfing and spending time with friends and family. Ryan is looking forward to a challenging career in the Financial Services Industry and plans on pursuing the CFA designation upon graduation.

Industrials Sector

Ryan Woitalla

Ryan graduated from Saint Michael-Albertville High School in 2014 and is currently a senior in the Labovitz School of Business and Economics at the University of Minnesota Duluth. He will graduate in May 2018 with a B.B.A., double majoring in Financial Markets Finance and Economics, along with a minor in Mathematics. Ryan will be a participant of the CFA Institute Research Challenge during this academic year and is serving as a student director for the Financial Markets Program. He is also participating in the Investments Club and is a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council at UMD. In addition to academics, Ryan worked as a purchasing intern at Allete in Duluth, MN this past summer, and he is a student equipment manager for the UMD men’s hockey team. In his free time, Ryan enjoys hunting, fishing, golfing, and spending time with family and friends. After graduation, Ryan plans to pursue a career in Finance.

Sebastian Spurrell

Sebastian was born and raised in Edmonton Alberta, Canada and graduated from Salisbury Composite High School in 2010. Sebastian is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth and expects to graduate in May 2018 with a Bachelor of Accounting along with a B.B.A in Financial Markets Finance. Sebastian is also a student athlete for the UMD Men’s Ice Hockey team where he plays Center for the Bulldogs. This year Sebastian looks forward to playing for the Men’s Ice Hockey team while enriching his knowledge in the Financial Service Industry through the unique LSBE Financial Markets experience. Upon graduation, Sebastian plans to work in the financial services industry and to obtain his CPA and/or CFA. Later down the road Sebastian would like to share his knowledge with others and become a professor.

Technology Sector 

Lynn Astrup

Lynn graduated from Warroad High School in 2014. She is a senior student-athlete on the Division 1 women’s ice hockey team at the University of Minnesota Duluth. She will graduate in May of 2018 with a dual-degree B.Acc. and B.B.A. in Accounting and Financial Markets Finance as well as a minor in Psychology. Lynn has worked the past 2 busy seasons as a Lead Tax Intern at RSM here in Duluth. This past summer, she interned in PwC’s Silicon Valley office in San Jose, CA. As a Core Tax intern, she assisted on client engagements for the world’s leading technology companies. She was inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma, an academic honor society that recognizes students in the top 10% of their class within the Labovitz School of Business and Economics. She is also an NCAA All-Academic Scholar Athlete. Aside from being a student-athlete, she enjoys running her PS29 Powerskating and Dryland training camps, water skiing, playing tennis and reading. After graduation, Lynn plans to obtain both the CPA and CFA designations and start her career in Public Accounting, Management Consulting or the Financial Services Industry.

Grant Pulver

Grant graduated from McDonell Central High School in 2014. He is a currently a senior on the University of Minnesota Duluth Cross Country and Track & Field teams. He will graduate in May 2018 with a B.S. in Statistics and Actuarial Science and a B.B.A. in Financial Markets. Grant interned at Morningstar as a data analyst in Chicago, Illinois this past summer. He created an automated fund comparison tool using VBA and SQL for the internal strategy mapping process. Grant has been the recipient of numerous academic honors while being in the top 5% of his class. He is involved in Investment Club and Scholars Club as well as various community services events. Grant enjoys traveling and spending time on lakes with his friends and family. Upon graduation, Grant plans to pursue a career related to quantitative finance where he can incorporate his interests in financial markets, statistics, and computer science.
