UMD's Center for Economic Development Helps Businesses, Entrepreneurs, and Professionals Grow and Succeed
The UMD Center for Economic Development (CED) is the primary gateway for businesses, entrepreneurs, and professionals in the Northland seeking resources and expertise geared toward business and talent development.
The CED is Minnesota’s Northeast Region Small Business Development Center (SBDC), which provides free consulting services to small businesses defined as 500 employees or less. Our team of small business consultants are highly skilled in a variety of topics to help entrepreneurs launch business ideas and to help established businesses improve existing processes or grow to the next level. Each year, we work with approximately 700 current and aspiring small businesses to develop business plans, project financials, facilitate loans, and provide market research, among other business needs.
The CED education offerings provide individuals numerous learning opportunities to develop their talents and meet professional and organizational needs. From computer classes in Excel and QuickBooks, to in-depth workshops in supervisory and leadership skills, learners gain knowledge and skills necessary for business and career successes. Our learning and talent development professionals can also help organizations design customized training to meet employees' continuing education needs.
Throughout the year, the CED provides additional resources and services that facilitate entrepreneurial activities and business development, such as:
- Email newsletters containing helpful tips for starting and running an effective business, legal and tax updates, and announcements for relevant local events.
- A Business Resource Library housing a wide range of business and entrepreneurial publications, which saves clients the expense of purchasing the resources on their own.
- The Student to Business Initiative (SBI) connecting small businesses with UMD students, who conduct research and analysis to provide recommendations for improved business processes and outcomes.
- Room facilities and planning services at the CED providing businesses with affordable and flexible options for conducting business activities.
