Are you looking for something a little more non-traditional in a business degree? Do you have creative energy and the desire to use that productively?

The BBA in Marketing & Graphic Design (MGD), a collaborative professional degree between the Labovitz School of Business and Economics (LSBE) and the School of Fine Arts (SFA), can bring these things together for you. There is a strong industry need for graduates whose skills span beyond the traditional disciplines in business. Many organizations are looking for entry-level graduates who are trained in traditional marketing analysis but who also possess applied graphic design skills. 

The MGD major combines core marketing knowledge with graphic design skills so that you can help companies create effective traditional and online marketing campaigns that are built on strong business and design fundamentals. This major provides you with a broad exposure to the fundamentals of business and economics. In addition, you'll receive specialized training in marketing and creative design.

The degree will enable you to work effectively in industry-standard creative teams, moving from empirically identifying and measuring consumer needs and desires to the design of effective promotional graphic systems and materials.

The MGD major is a selective program restricting the number of students admitted to the major to 30 per year.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Students accepted into the program are expected to achieve the following learning outcomes:

  • Solve visual communication problems across multiple media effectively and creatively.
  • Demonstrate competent use of current, industry-standard design tools and software.

WHEN SHOULD YOU APPLY
You are free to apply at any stage of your degree program at UMD, even as a freshman. Admission early in your tenure at UMD is preferred (e.g. apply as a Freshman or Sophomore instead of waiting to Junior or Senior year). The deadline for applications for the 2019-2020 academic year is Friday, February 22, 2019, at 4:00 p.m. Applications and materials should be dropped off in LSBE 335 (Department of Marketing). The Marketing and Graphic Design major requires you to plan your courses very carefully, because many of the Art courses are NOT offered each semester. Requirements cannot be waived.  Use the Graduation Planner and look at the prerequisites for EACH course before you schedule it, making sure you have scheduled it for the semester that it is offered. By doing this, you will know exactly how many more semesters it will take to complete your MGD major.

COMPUTERS

The required laptop configuration for all Graphics classes you will take in this major can be found here. MGD majors MUST purchase the computer configuration that corresponds to the School of Fine Arts, Art and Design Department, NOT the computer configuration for LSBE.
