One of the primary goals of the Financial Markets Program is to provide "hands-on" learning. Through not only the Financial Markets Lab, but through experiencing the financial industry first hand and real time.

Consumer Discretionary Sector

Alexander Glockner

Alex

Alexander graduated from Minnetonka High School in 2011 and is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Alexander expects to graduate in May 2017 with a B.B.A in Financial Markets Finance and a minor in Accounting. In the summer of 2016, Alexander worked as a Due Diligence Analyst Intern for U.S. Bank at its corporate headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Alexander serves as the Vice President of the Investments Club at UMD and is a participant of the 2017 CFA Institute Research Challenge. Alexander also participated on the UMD Men’s Club Hockey Team and served as the President during his sophomore year. In his free time, Alexander loves to play hockey, golf, tennis and watch sports. Upon graduation, Alexander plans to pursue a challenging career in the Financial Services Industry and obtain his CFA designation and M.S. in Finance.

Curt LaChappelle        

Curt

Curt graduated from Hill-Murray High School in Maplewood, Minnesota in 2013. Curt is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth and is on track to graduate in May of 2017 with a B.B.A. in Financial Markets Finance. Curt serves as the President for the UMD Investment Club and Student Director for the LSBE Financial Markets Program. This year, Curt will be participating in the 2017 CFA Institute Research Challenge. Outside of the classroom, Curt enjoys golfing, playing hockey, and spending time with family. Upon graduation, Curt plans to pursue a career in the Financial Services Industry. Curt also plans on obtaining the CFA designation and M.B.A. Later on in life, Curt would like to give back by bringing his industry experience into the classroom as a professor of finance.

Mitch Newton

Mitch

Mitch is from Lino Lakes, MN and graduated from Centennial High School in 2012. Mitch is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth and expects to graduate in May 2017, with a B.B.A. in Financial Markets Finance and a minor in Accounting. Mitch is also an active member of the UMD Investment Club. When Mitch is not busy with his academics, he can be found participating in campus Intramural sports, golfing, hiking, and spending time with his friends and family. After graduation, Mitch plans on pursuing a career in the Financial Services Industry and obtaining his CFA designation  and M.B.A.

Luke Stone

Luke

Luke graduated from Chaska High School in Chaska, Minnesota in 2012. Luke is currently in his senior year at the University of Minnesota Duluth and is planning to graduate in May of 2017 with a B.B.A. in Financial Markets, Finance. In the summer of 2016, Luke interned in the Wealth Management area of Voya Financial in the Twin Cities. Luke will be participating in the 2017 CFA Institutional Research Challenge and is also a member of the UMD Investment Club. In his free time, Luke enjoys playing basketball, being outside and spending time with friends and family. Upon graduation, Luke plans to pursue a career in the Financial Services Industry and working to obtain his CFA.  

Energy Sector

Nathan Herman                                 

Nate

Nathan graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 2013 and is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Nathan is on track to graduate in May 2017 with a B.B.A. in Financial Markets-Finance and Economics. Nathan is also one of the three student directors for the program. This past summer, Nathan interned with Wells Fargo Wealth and Investment Management in Minneapolis, MN. Nathan has been actively involved with his university over the last four years, serving as: Vice President of Administration and Finance for UMD Student Association, Team Lead Freshmen Orientation Leader and UMD Investment Club participant. Nathan also had the opportunity to study abroad in Rome, Italy during his sophomore year. During his free time, Nathan enjoys traveling, hiking the trails in Duluth, and trying out new restaurants with friends. After graduation, Nathan plans on pursuing a career in the Financial Services Industry.

Stephen Espel

Espel

Stephen is from Fargo, North Dakota and graduated from Fargo North High School in 2013. Stephen is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and is on track to graduate in May 2017 with a B.B.A in Financial Markets-Finance and a minor in Economics. In the summer of 2016, Stephen worked as a Financial Analyst Intern for Arrow Electronics in Denver, Colorado. Stephen is Student Director and will be a participant in the 2017 CFA Institute Research Challenge and active member of the UMD Investments Club. In his free time, Stephen loves to play basketball, travel, hike, and golf. Upon graduation, Stephen plans to pursue a challenging career in the Financial Services Industry and obtain the CFA designation and M.B.A.

Adam Baxter

Adam

Adam graduated from Cambridge-Isanti High School in 2013. Adam is in his senior year at the University of Minnesota Duluth and is expected to graduate in May 2017 with a B.B.A in Financial Markets Finance. In addition to participating in the LSBE Financial Markets Program, Adam is also participating in the 2017 CFA research challenge. Adam is currently a member of the 2016 LSBE entrepreneurship conference planning committee, the president and founder of Kanye West club, and a founding member of Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity at UMD. Adam enjoys traveling, playing basketball, and spending time with his family. Upon graduation, Adam plans to pursue a career in derivatives trading.

Travis Eisenbacher

Travis

Travis graduated from Eden Valley Watkins High School in 2012 and is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Travis is on track to successfully complete his degree program in May 2017 with a B.B.A in Financial Markets – Finance. This past summer, Travis interned at Piper Jaffray & Co. in the Equity Research department and worked with senior Consumer research analysts on the Hardlines Retail and Specialty Products team conducting proprietary company and industry research, analysis, and note publication. During the school year, Travis will also be returning to his prior position as a research assistant at the LSBE Bureau of Business and Economic Research. He will be participating in this year’s CFA Institute Research Challenge as well. As a member of the UMD chapter of Alpha Delta for the duration of his time in Duluth, notably leading the group as President this past year, Travis has also been an active member of the campus community and volunteered for numerous organizations and events around Duluth. Outside of his academic and professional pursuits, Travis enjoys spending time with his girlfriend, watching movies, and being outdoors. After graduating, Travis hopes to continue exploring his interests in finance and investing with a rewarding career in the Financial Services Industry.

Healthcare Sector

Alex Stetson

Alex

Alex graduated from Centennial High School in 2013. Alex is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth and is on track to graduate in May 2017 with a B.B.A. in Financial Markets Finance. Alex is an active member of the UMD Investment Club and is involved in multiple intramural sports on campus. Alex likes to spend his free time playing basketball, traveling, exercising, and spending time with friends and family. Upon graduation, Alex plans to pursue a career in the Financial Services Industry and obtain his CFA designation.

Andrew Burke

Burke

Andrew graduated from Aitkin High School in 2013 and is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Andrew is on track to graduate in May of 2017 with a B.B.A. in Economics and a B.B.A. in the Financial Markets Finance. Andrew currently works for the UMD Bureau of Business and Economic Research as an Undergraduate Research Assistant where he helps perform and interpret economic impact analyses for various companies, agencies, and organizations. Andrew currently serves on the Committee for Awards, Recognition, and Excellence. He possesses a strong academic interest in economics and hopes to gain a better understanding of the macroeconomic factors that drive business growth and strengthen his presentations skills through the FMP experience. In his spare time, Andrew enjoys playing beach volleyball, disc golf, football, and kayaking. Upon graduation, Andrew plans to pursue a challenging and entertaining career within the Financial Services Industry.  

Industrials Sector

James Ostrem

James

James graduated from Edina High School in 2013 and is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth. James expects to graduate in May 2017 with a B.B.A in Financial Markets Finance. James is participating in the 2017 CFA Institute Research Challenge.  James is a member of the UMD Investment Club and has been the Treasurer of his fraternity, Phi Kappa Psi for the past two years. Outside of school, James enjoys camping, golfing, reading, tennis, soccer, mountain biking, and time at his cabin. After graduation, James plans to pursue a career in the Financial Services Industry. He plans on pursuing his CFA designation. James’ dream job is to be a portfolio manager one day.

Troy Bentz 

Troy

Troy graduated from Apple Valley High School in 2012. He is currently a senior in the Labovitz School of Business and Economics at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Troy is expected to graduate in May 2017 with a B.B.A in Financial Markets Finance, and a B.Acc. in Accounting. Troy is also participating in the 2017 CFA Institute Research Challenge. Outside of work and academics, he is involved in numerous intramurals and clubs on campus. Additionally, Troy likes to relax with friends, watch sports and travel. Upon graduation, Troy would like to relocate to Chicago, Illinois to pursue his CPA or CFA certifications.  

Basic Materials Sector

Jacob Rahbain

Jacob

Jacob graduated from Lakeville South High School in 2013 and is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Jacob is expected to graduate May 2017 with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Financial Markets – Finance. This past summer, Jacob interned at Morgan Stanley in Wealth Management. Throughout his internship, Jacob worked alongside a team of financial advisors and assisted in providing efficient financial service to existing clients, as well as tailoring investment proposals to client prospects. With that, Jacob analyzed various equities, exchange-traded funds, and mutual funds in assisting financial advisors in formulating investment rationale tailored to specific client goals and objectives. While attending school, Jacob is an active participant in the UMD Investment Club and volunteers at the Damiano Center in Duluth. In his free time, Jacob enjoys participating in UMD Intramurals such as Hockey, Softball, and Curling. Jacob’s other hobbies include hunting and fishing. Upon graduation, Jacob plans to acquire his CFP and CFA designations in pursuing a career in Financial Services Industry. 

Jack Radford

Jack

Jack graduated from Lakeville South High school in 2013. Jack is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth and expects to graduate in May 2017 with a B.B.A. in Financial Markets Finance. In the summer of 2016, Jack worked as a Bank Teller at Wells Fargo & Company, where he was given the chance to expand his knowledge of the Financial Service Industry. This experience gave Jack the opportunity to volunteer within the community and meet industry professionals with the same interests. Jack is also a member of the UMD Investment Club and a participant of the 2017 CFA Institute Research Challenge. Outside of the professional world, Jack enjoys golfing, playing hockey, managing his personal portfolio, spending time with friends and family, and other outdoor activities. After graduation, Jack intends to pursue a career in the Financial Service Industry and obtain his CFA designation.

Technology Sector

Ryan Coop

Ryan

Ryan graduated from Cambridge-Isanti High School in Cambridge, Minnesota in 2013. He is currently a senior and expects to graduate in May 2017 with a B.B.A. in Financial Markets Finance. Ryan is a member of the UMD Investment Club and spends much of his free time learning about the markets to pursue his passion of financial markets. This year, Ryan is looking forward to improving his analytical skills by actively participating in the LSBE Financial Markets Program. Ryan is an active member in intramural sports as well as staying active and spending time with family and friends. Upon graduation, Ryan plans on pursuing a career in the Financial Services Industry and obtaining his CFA designation.  

Matt Hansen

Matt

Matt graduated from Forest Lake High School in 2013 and is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Matt expects to graduate in May of 2017 with a double major with a B.B.A in Financial Markets Finance and a B.A in Hispanic Studies. Matt is participating in the 2017 CFA Institute Research Challenge and is an active member in the UMD Investment Club. Matt was inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma, an academic honor society that recognizes students in the top 10% of their class within the Labovitz School of Business and Economics. In June of 2015, Matt studied abroad in Spain where he enhanced his fluency in Spanish. In his free time, Matt enjoys hunting, fishing, snowboarding, working on old cars with his father, and networking. Matt also enjoys participating in UMD Intramurals, including softball, basketball, and broomball. Upon graduation, Matt plans to pursue a career in the Financial Services Industry, obtain his CFA designation, and one day fulfilling his entrepreneurial dream by owning his own business.

Utilities Sector

Grant Farley

Grant

Grant graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 2013 and is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth.  Grant is expected to graduate in May 2017 with a B.B.A. in Financial Markets Finance.  Grant is also a UMD student-athlete participating on the UMD men’s baseball team where he plays outfield for the Bulldogs.  The past two summers, Grant has interned at RBC Capital Markets U.S. corporate headquarters in the newly configured Business Technology Initiatives Department.  This school year, Grant is looking forward to participating on the UMD baseball team and enhancing his analytical skills through the unique LSBE Financial Markets Program experience.  Outside of school and athletics, Grant enjoys hunting, fishing, and volunteering with Duluth youth with his teammates.  Upon graduation, Grant plans to pursue a career as a Financial Advisor and obtaining his CFP designation.

Pete Vatalaro

Pete

Peter grew up in Duluth, Minnesota and graduated from Marshall High school in 2012. Peter is currently in his fifth year at the University of Minnesota Duluth and will be graduating in May 2017 with a B.B.A in Financial Markets Finance. This year, Peter is looking forward to enhancing his financial skills by actively participating on a daily basis in the Wells Fargo Financial Markets Lab. Outside of the classroom, Peter enjoys hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, riding ATV’s, and spending time with friends and family. Upon graduation, Peter plans to pursue a career as a Financial Advisor in his hometown of Duluth, MN.
