Financial Markets Program

One of the primary goals of the Financial Markets Program is to provide "hands-on" learning. Through not only the Financial Markets Lab, but through experiencing the financial industry first hand and real time.

Communications Sector

Nicholas Duda

Nicholas Duda

Nick graduated from Burnsville High School in 2015 and is currently a senior at the University of
Minnesota Duluth pursing his B.B.A in Financial Markets Finance, minoring in Accounting and
pursuing his professional selling certificate and is on track to graduate in May 2020. Outside of the
classroom, Nick proudly serves his country in the MN Army National Guard and donates his time to
officiate youth hockey games in the Duluth area and likes to spend his free time with family and
friends. Upon graduation, Nick looks forward to a rewarding and challenging career in the Financial
Services Industry.

Consumer Discretionary Sector

Sam Moorhead

Sam Moorhead

Sam graduated from Warroad High School in 2016 and is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Sam will graduate in May of 2020 with a  B.B.A in Financial Markets Finance and a minor in Accounting. This year, Sam is also participating in the CFA Institute Research Challenge to gain a better understanding of equity analysis. Sam also served as an assistant captain on the UMD Men’s Club Hockey team during the 2017-2018 season where he has since retired. Sam has been an active member of the Investment Club at UMD since he was a freshman and this year will take on the role of Social Chair for the club. Sam also currently works at Bank of America Merrill where he is a part of the Sieh Henderson group working as a seasonal associate. Upon graduation, Sam plans to acquire his CFA designation while pursuing a challenging career in the Financial Services Industry. 

Nicholas Speltz

Nicholas Speltz

Nicholas graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 2016, and is currently a Senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Nicholas is majoring in Financial Markets Finance and Minoring in Economics, and will be graduating in the Spring of 2020. Nicholas is a member of the Investment Club, a tutor for the University Library, and has worked as a research assistant for the Labovitz School of Business and Economics during his time at UMD. This past Summer, Nicholas interned with 3M in the Treasury organization where he worked with the banking team on projects related to commercial banking relationships. Nicholas will be participating in the CFA Institute Research Challenge this fall. In his free time, Nicholas enjoys following Minnesota sports, visiting his cabin, and spending time with good friends. Upon graduation, Nicholas plans on pursuing a career in the Financial Services Industry, as well as pursue a CFA designation or an MBA from a prestigious university.

 

Consumer Staples Sector

Brandon Rud

Brandon Rud

Brandon graduated from Blaine High School in 2017 and is currently a junior at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Brandon expects to graduate in December of 2020 with a B.B.A in Financial Markets Finance. Last summer, Brandon interned remotely for Tigress Financial Partners in their equity research division. In addition to participating in the Financial Markets Program, Brandon is partaking in the CFA Research Challenge this year. Brandon is an officer of UMD’s investment club has been a member since his freshman year. Brandon’s interests outside of school include fishing, hunting, wakeboarding, and skiing. Upon graduation, Brandon plans to pursue his CFA or CFP designation and start his career in the Financial Services Industry.

Ben Thelen

Ben Thelen

Ben graduated from Mounds View High School in 2017 and is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Ben will be graduating in May, 2020 with a B.B.A in Financial Markets-Finance. Throughout the summer, Ben interned at BNC National Bank working as a Financial Analyst Intern. As a Financial Analyst intern he helped manage the company’s balance sheet, interest rate risk, and liquidity. Ben’s favorite hobbies include trick skiing, photography, and investing. He has been a part of UMD’s Skiing, and Photography Clubs since 2017. After graduation he plan on obtaining his CFA designation, and perusing a career in portfolio management.

Energy Sector

Maxwell Carlos

Maxwell Carlos

Maxwell graduated from Anoka High School in 2016 and is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota
Duluth. Maxwell will graduate in May 2020 with a B.B.A in Financial Markets Finance and a minor in
Economics. Maxwell received the U Promise and Sponsor a Student Scholarships this year. During his time at
UMD, Maxwell has been actively involved in a variety of service activities on campus. He recently served as a
Business tutor for courses such as Econometrics, Applied Statistics, Corporate Finance, and
Macro/Microeconomics. He is also an active member of the Investment Club and Financial Planning Club at
UMD. When Maxwell isn’t looking for the next best investment idea, he enjoys spending time with friends and
family, playing hockey and disk golfing, reading, and exploring the North Shore of Minnesota. Upon graduation,
Maxwell plans to pursue a rewarding career in the Financial Services Industry and will obtain his CFA
designation.

Jack Jenson

Jack Jenson

Jack is a graduate of Eagan High School and spent a year postgrad playing junior hockey in
Corpus Christi, Texas. Jack came to UMD in the fall of 2015 and recently graduated in May with
a B.B.A in Finance and an Economics minor. He spent the past summer serving as a Finance and
Investment Team Intern with JNBA Financial Advisors, gaining valuable experience working
under the company’s Director of Investments and CFA by conducting portfolio and security
analysis utilizing a variety of research systems to build financial tools, model portfolios, and
construct customer equity reports. He has returned to campus for the 2019-2020 school year to
participate in the LSBE Financial Markets Program where he currently serves as a Student
Director, and he will also be competing in the CFA Institute Research Challenge. Jack enjoys
spending his free time with family and friends, traveling, hiking up the north shore, and playing
golf and hockey when possible. After the program, Jack plans to pursue a career in Equity
Research and obtain his CFA designation.

Financial Sector

Rory Bakke

Rory Bakke

Rory graduated from Cook County High School in 2016 and is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth. He will graduate in May of 2020 with a B.B.A. in Financial Markets Finance. During his senior year, Rory interned at Wells Fargo Private Bank in Duluth, where he expanded both his communication and research skills within the Financial Services Industry. Rory is looking forward to growing his understanding of financial markets as he gains proficiency through the LSBE Financial Markets Program. Rory’s interests include watching sports, personal investing, as well as spending time with friends and family. Upon graduation, Rory plans to pursue a career in the Financial Services Industry.

Austin Knapp

Austin Knapp

Austin graduated from Hopkins High School in 2016 and is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota Duluth pursuing a B.B.A. in Financial Markets Finance. Over the summer Austin was a Finance Intern at Polaris Industries where he worked with Logistics Finance. Austin is on track to graduate in May 2020 and is looking forward to the next challenges that life presents, utilizing the financial knowledge that he has gained in the program. Outside of Investing, Austin enjoys building cars, as well as spending time outdoors exploring new places and socializing with friends.

Healthcare Sector

Sarah Harrison

Sarah Harrison

Sarah graduated from Orono High School in 2016 and is currently a senior at the University of
Minnesota Duluth. She will graduate in May 2020 with two degrees: a B.B.A in Financial
Markets Finance and a B.A. in Hispanic Studies. Over the summer of 2019, Sarah completed an
internship with eCapital Advisors in Bloomington, MN, and she has accepted a position as a
consultant beginning July 2020. While at UMD, Sarah competed for the Track and Cross Country
team from fall 2016 until winter 2018. She is currently an active member of Investment Club
and an inductee of the Beta Gamma Sigma within LSBE. Outside of the classroom, Sarah enjoys
running, reading, hiking, and camping. She is excited to improve her skills in equity analysis over
the course of the year and continue to develop those skills throughout her future career.

Jordan Thorpe

Jordan Thorpe

Jordan graduated from Waconia High School in 2017 and is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota
Duluth, pursuing her interest of the financial markets by participating as a student equity analyst in the LSBE
Financial Markets Program. Jordan will be graduating early in the spring of 2020 with a B.B.A. in Financial
Markets Finance, and a minor in International Business. Jordan is actively involved with Women in Business,
the UMD Investment Club, the University Honors Program, and the Tau Delta chapter of Mortar Board to
broaden her knowledge of business and the Financial Services Industry. During her time at UMD, Jordan has
been actively involved in a variety of service activities both on and off campus. Jordan is also conducting
empirical research on how people make investments decisions, whether through intuition or rationale, and is
participating in the CFA Research Challenge this year to gain a better understanding of equity analysis. Over
the summer, Jordan embarked on a journey of a lifetime down under in Australia, as well as interned at Lockton
Companies as a Commercial Insurance Broker Intern, developing risk management workbooks in Excel.
Throughout this school year Jordan will also continue working in the kitchen on campus in order to further grow
her own portfolio. In her free time, Jordan loves to read, travel, spend time with friends and family, and enjoy
the great outdoors. Jordan looks forward to a challenging and rewarding year and plans to pursue her CFA
designation, along with a career in the Financial Services Industry upon graduation.

Industrials Sector

Lucas Aubin

Lucas Aubin

Lucas graduated from Blaine High School in 2017 and is currently a senior at the University of
Minnesota Duluth. Lucas is on track to graduate in the spring of 2020 with a B.B.A in Financial
Markets Finance and a minor in Economics. This year, Lucas is participating in the CFA Institute
Research Challenge. Additionally, he is the Treasurer of Investment Club where he has been a
participant since his freshman year. In the summer of 2019, Lucas was employed at Dow Jones
as a Content Licensing Intern where he gained valuable experience licensing market data. In his
spare time Lucas likes to be at his cabin, hunt, fish, and play pond hockey. Upon graduation,
Lucas plans to pursue a career as an investment analyst and work towards obtaining his CFA
designation.

Sydney Brodt

Sydney Brodt

Sydney graduated from Mounds View High School in 2016 and is currently a senior at the University of
Minnesota Duluth. Sydney will graduate in the Spring of 2020 with a B.B.A. in Financial Markets Finance
and a minor in Psychology. Sydney is on the University of Minnesota Duluth's Division I Women’s Hockey
Team and has been the team’s captain for three years. She is also a member of the USA Women’s
National Hockey Team, where she most recently won a World Championship in Finland in 2019. In her
free time, she enjoys spending time outdoors, golfing, water skiing and fishing. Sydney is looking
forward to gaining knowledge and broadening her analytical skills throughout the program experience.

Zane Peterson

Zane Peterson

Zane graduated from Denfeld High School in 2016 and is currently a senior at the University of
Minnesota Duluth. Zane will graduate in May 2020 with a B.B.A. in Financial Markets Finance. This year,
Zane will intern at Wells Fargo in Duluth assisting with research projects and the oversight of trust
assets. Zane is also a member of the Men’s Club Hockey Team and will serve as Treasurer this season.
Zane’s interests include playing and watching sports, travelling, and fishing. Upon graduation, Zane plans
to pursue a career in the financial services industry while obtaining his CFA designation.

Technology Sector 

Sean Grote

Sean Grote

Sean graduated from Milton High School in 2016 and is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota
Duluth. Sean will graduate in May 2020 with a B.B.A in Financial Markets Finance and a minor in
Economics. Sean serves as a Student Director for the Financial Markets Program, and has been
extremely involved on campus holding the position of Vice President of Student Association for two
terms, chairing the Student Organization Grant Committee, serving as a Student Member of the Student
Service Fee Committee, and Co-Founding a Consulting and Weightlifting Club. Sean is participating in the
CFA Institute Research Challenge team at UMD this year. Outside of school, Sean enjoys spending time
with his family and friends as well as training as a competitive powerlifter. After graduation, Sean plans
to pursue a challenging career in the Financial Services Industry while obtaining his CFA designation and
MBA.

Wayne Lefebvre

Wayne Lefebvre

Wayne graduated from Zimmerman High School in 2016. He is currently a senior at the
University of Minnesota Duluth and will graduate in May of 2020 with a B.B.A. in Financial
Markets Finance and a minor in accounting. Wayne serves as a Student Director for the LSBE
Financial Markets Program, President of UMD Investment Club, and is a member of Beta
Gamma Sigma Honor Society. He will also be participating in the CFA Institute Research
Challenge this year. In his free time, Wayne enjoys watching Minnesota sports, fishing, reading,
and spending time with his family and friends. After graduation, he plans to pursue a career in
the financial services industry while obtaining his MBA and CFA designation.

Incoming Participants 

Alex Koncilja

Alex graduated from Roseville High School in 2017 and is currently a junior at the University of
Minnesota Duluth Pursuing a B.B.A. in Financial Markets Finance. Last summer, Alex interned at CUNA
Mutual Group as an Accounting and Finance Intern working in corporate strategy and treasury. During
the school year, Alex serves on the Kirby Program Board as the Finance Chair, The Student Service Fees
Committee, and is the current President of the Donut Connoisseurs of Duluth. Alex is looking forward to
expanding his knowledge in equity research while creating new connections. In his free time, Alex enjoys
a nice round of golf, hiking, skiing, and cooking. After graduation, Alex plans to pursue a career in the
Financial Services Industry while obtaining his CFA designation.

Max Michaelis

Max graduated from Elk River High School in 2017 and is currently a junior at the University of
Minnesota Duluth. Max is on track to graduate in the spring of 2021 with a B.B.A in Financial Markets
Finance. Next year, Max plans to participate in the CFA Institute Research Challenge. Additionally, he is
an officer of Investment Club where he has been a participant since his freshman year. In the summer of
2019, Max worked at USI Insurance Services as an Operations Accounting Specialist. In Max’s free time,
he likes to spend his days on the lake water skiing, golfing and hanging with his friends. After graduation,
Max wants to pursue a career in Equity Research and obtain an MBA or C.F.A.

Nathan Brand

Nathan graduated from De La Salle High School in 2017. He is a current junior at the University of
Minnesota Duluth and will graduate in May of 2021 with a B.B.A. in Financial Markets Finance and a
minor in Economics. Nathan is a current Undergraduate Research Assistant at the Bureau of Business
and Economic Research, he also serves as the treasurer of the economics club, and as a member of the
investment club. His hobbies outside of school include running, fishing, and spending time with family
and friends. After graduation, Nathan is planning on pursuing a career in the financial services industry
in either a portfolio management, quantitative research, or investment banking role.

Andrew McClure

Andrew graduated from Chaska High School in 2017 and is currently a junior at the University of
Minnesota Duluth. Graduating in May of 2021, Andrew will be receiving his B.B.A. in Financial Markets-
Finance. Over this past summer Andrew had the opportunity to intern with Stansberry Research in
Baltimore, Maryland. There he took the role of an Equity Research Intern working with Senior Analyst
conducting research on specific companies, as well as market trends. Outside of school Andrew enjoys
spending time with family and friends, fishing, golfing, and reading. After school, Andrew plans to
pursue a career within the Financial Services while working to obtain his CFA designation.

Matt Laciskey

Matt graduated from Blaine High School in 2017 and is currently a junior at the University of Minnesota
Duluth. Matt was accepted into the Financial Markets Program in October of 2019 and will be
graduating in May 2021 with a B.B.A in Financial Markets Finance and a B.B.A in Financial Planning. He is
currently in search of an internship within the Financial Services Industry for the summer of 2020. In his
free time, he enjoys watching sports, hanging out with friends and going to his cabin to hunt, fish and
snowmobile. Upon graduation, Matt plans to pursue his CFP or CFA designation and start his career in
the Financial Services Industry.

Ben Meyers

Ben graduated from Elk River High School in 2017 and is currently a junior at the University of
Minnesota Duluth. Ben is on track to graduate in May of 2021 with a B.B.A in Financial Markets Finance
and Financial Planning. Ben is recently serving as a Business Tutor for Corporate Finance, Economics, and
Business Statistics classes. He is an officer of UMD Investment Club and an active member in Financial
Planning Club. Ben looks forward to gaining a better understanding of equity research while building
important personal skills during his time in the program. Outside of school, Ben enjoys reading, fishing,
hunting, and spending quality time with his family. After graduation Ben plans to pursue a career in the
Financial Services Industry while obtaining his CFP designation and MBA.

Bennett Kerfeld

Bennett graduated from Chaska High School in 2017 and is currently a junior at the University of
Minnesota Duluth. In fall of 2019, Bennett was accepted into the Financial Markets Program. He is on
track to graduate in the spring of 2021 and with a B.B.A. in Financial Markets Finance. Over the summer,
he worked at a Kwik Trip in Hermantown and coached a local youth travelling lacrosse team called the
Duluth Chargers. Currently, Bennett participates in the Investment Club, as well as spending time with
and learning from current Financial Markets Program members. In his spare time, he enjoys fishkeeping,
playing and coaching lacrosse, spending time with his dog and personal investing. Bennett is looking
forward to learning more about the markets as well as learning how to be more successful in the
financial field.

Pat Ruhland

Pat graduated from Shakopee High School in 2017 and is currently a junior at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Pat expects to graduate in the spring of 2021 with B.B.A in Financial Markets Finance and a minor in Accounting. Pat is searching for an internship for the summer of 2020 in the Financial Service Industry. In his spare time Pat likes to watch sports, hunt, fish, and hangout with family and friends. Upon graduation, Pat plans to pursue a career in the Financial Services Industry and obtain his CFA designation.
